NHS taps blockchain tech to monitor COVID-19 vaccine cold chains

With the roll out of COVID-19 vaccines being commenced across some countries, various health service facilities have begun a lookout for ways to properly monitor cold storage facilities that are used for storing vaccines jabs.

In one such instance, a digital asset tracking and monitoring supplier- Everyware, and Hedera Hashgraph, one of the prominent enterprise-grade distributed ledger providers, have announced working closely with an initial group of NHS facilities to monitor COVID-19 vaccine cold chains.

Reports have it that the South Warwickshire NHS would stand to be the first facility adopting the technology across Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick hospitals.

Speaking on this, Electro BioMedical Engineering Manager at South Warwickshire NHS, Steve Clarke, stated that Everyware has already positioned itself as a trusted partner, helping the facility monitor the integrity of an expansive range of clinical application, and now, as the service facility is looking towards rolling out the COVID-19 vaccines, the importance of utilizing the firm’s tracking and monitoring capabilities would potentially allow them to demonstrate the commitment to offer safe patient care.

On the other hand, commenting on the novel move, Tom Screen, Technical Director at Everyware, quoted that since monitoring the ongoing temperature of cold chain refrigeration units remains a critical deal, the company is working toward ensuring the integrity of the data while also being able to share these across the entire vaccine supply chain via celebrating the collaboration with other related partners.

This all seems possible due to Hedera’s significant involvement. Tom added that Hedera’s distributed ledger technology offers tamper-proof record keeping system, which makes it perfect for recording and authenticating results effectively and cost efficiently.

Meanwhile, in a statement released by Hedera Founder and CEO, Mance Harmon, the company makes it practical and cost-effective for organizations to leverage benefits out of the transparency and accountability of distributed ledgers.

He also stated that the company is pleased to have established a connection with Everyware to bring out the data integrity and trust to the pivotal work the latter company has been doing with NHS hospitals in support of the COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
