Cresols Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast 2024

Recent years have seen a significant rise in infectious disease outbreaks, as evidenced by the current coronavirus thread sweeping across the globe. Infectious diseases are among the leading causes of deaths in the world, especially in developing nations with more vulnerable demographics like small children and geriatric populations.

Most infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms such as viruses, fungi or bacteria, among others, which can be transmitted, either directly or indirectly through exposure to contaminated surfaces, or from person to person.

However, despite the alarming nature of these diseases, they can be controlled by following stringent regulations and activities, most importantly disinfection.

Disinfection is usually carried out using various chemical compounds such as phenols and cresols, aldehydes, anilides, alcohols, chlorine-releasing agents, heavy metal derivatives and more.

The cresols market is likely to contribute significantly towards accommodating the rising disinfectant demand in recent years, owing to the product’s significant role in the creation of various disinfectant products, especially those that are phenol or toluene based.

Cresols, also known as hydroxytoluenes, are methylphenol-based organic compounds. These compounds can occur either naturally, through extraction from coal tar, or can be synthetically produced.  They are aromatic compounds and are categorized as phenols, also known as phenolics in some cases.

Based on product type, cresols industry is broadly categorized into meta-cresols, ortho-cresols or para-cresols. A mixture of these three isomers, also known as m-cresols, o-cresols and p-cresols, is known as pure cresols. A major application of cresols is as a synthetic intermediate or precursor to the development of myriad other materials and compounds, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, plastics, dyes and disinfectants, among others.

Of the three isomers, ortho-cresols, or o-cresols are used extensively as starting materials for various compounds, including lubricating oils, disinfectants, and even herbicides such as MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) and DNOC (4,6-dinitro-o-cresol)

Ortho-cresols & their usage in disinfectants

Ortho-cresol is an organic compound formed from the combination of phenol and a functional methyl group. It is also known by another moniker, 2-methylphenol. While it does occur naturally, o-cresols are also produced artificially.

These cresols are used extensively as chemical intermediates for the production of other chemical compounds and materials, owing to their superior solvency properties and unique reactivity.

O-cresol uses span the manufacturing process of several chemical compounds across various sectors including plastics, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other end-use industries.

Aside from these major industrial applications of cresols, the compounds are also used for the manufacture of materials like resins, dyes, pigments, fragrances, paper, leather, disinfectants, etc.
